Breast cancer rates dropped in 2003 for the first time since 1945. The Women's Health Initiative was stopped in 2002 when it was discovered that rates of breast cancer, strokes and blood clots were increasing in the group of women who were given synthetic estrogen and progestin. The findings of the study were that breast-cancer risk doubled when women took estrogen and progestin pills for five years or longer.

Many women went off their HRT only to become frustrated and to return because they were not given good alternatives. The use of bio-identical hormones has risen dramatically in the past six years.

It is still wise to ask your doctor to test your hormone levels accurately before prescribing a bio-identical hormone. ZRT laboratories offer a comprehensive test that includes saliva and blood spot. Blood serum tests that most doctors prescribe are not as good an indicator of true hormone levels. Check out www.salivatest.com to learn more about the testing procedure.

Women need to take charge of their own bodies and health. When we hear more and more about socialized medicine, it is going to be more important than ever to take good care of ourselves. Great Britain only allows cancer treatment for patients up to the $35,000 level. Once that has been met they are done.

Be patient and don't look for the "quick fix" with a pill. That is what doctors are used to doing. We go in, complain and want a quick fix so we are given pills. Often the side-effects of the pills are worse than the condition we went into the doctor about. Be smart, educate yourself.
